Respiratory hubs have been established at each WACA GP Practice, to help manage winter pressures and address the concern regarding same day paediatric care in general practice. The three aims of the service include; improving the quality of childhood acute illness management in primary care, reducing accident and emergency attendance and acute admission for children and supporting general practice with increased capacity in primary care. Appointments are allocated by individual GP practices and are available until the end of March 2023.
Patients with long term respiratory conditions living in Wharfedale were invited to a new Singing for Lung Health Course.
The Course was run by Sophie Wallace MSC Advanced Practice Nurse and Keely Hodgeson, BA music, musician, composer, arranger, and community choir leader. Sophie and Keely are part of the Bring Me Sunshine Trio with Karen Vaughan, bringing music to communities in care homes, schools and other care facilities for health and wellbeing. This course offered lung health support specifically at a time of year that is difficult for people to cope, reducing isolation and giving professional and peer support with sharing of up-to-date, relevant information regarding their conditions.
All participants were given help to learn to control their breathing and how to deal with their shortness of breath using their whole body through a variety of exercises including blowing bubbles through straws! This is the first course of its kind to be held in a primary care setting, and following a successful evaluation , plans are in place to offer this course to more Patients in 2023.
